She’s Alone — Or Is She?

Nancy Pelosi, as she accused the CIA today of lying to her about waterboarding, called for the notes from briefings of members of Congress to be released. She’d better be right about what’s in those notes. House Intelligence Ranking Republican Pete Hoekstra (R, Mich.) asked for the same documents to be released weeks ago.

Another note: this afternoon, on the House floor, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D, Md.) was none too eager to get aboard with Pelosi’s accusation. Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R, Va.) engaged him in a colloquy on the topic, stating, “I’d ask the gentleman whether he shares this belief, that somehow the CIA or others have intentionally misled this body, because that seems to be some concern that has been raised today?”

Glenn Thrush provides Hoyer’s reply, with video:

“I have no idea of that, don’t have a belief of that nature because I have no basis on which to base such a belief. And I certainly hope that’s not the case. I don’t draw that conclusion…[T]o a degree, that is a distraction. It is not irrelevant, but it is a distraction from the central point. And I will tell my friend that I think there is far too much discussion about what was said as opposed to what was done…”

Update: On the other hand, other Democrats, using the conditional “if” and again representing that Jane Harman’s now-famous letter objected to the practice of waterboarding (it did not), provide quotes to Manu Raju here.
