Shop Class

Three years ago, Matthew Crawford’s essay “Shop Class as Soulcraft” appeared in The New Atlantis and caused a stir, here on The Corner and elsewhere. The essay is now a book, published this week, and our Between the Covers podcast is here. We talk about the psychic and economic importance of manual labor, the loss of shop classes in high schools, and the value of individual entrepreneurship.

John J. Miller, the national correspondent for National Review and host of its Great Books podcast, is the director of the Dow Journalism Program at Hillsdale College. He is the author of A Gift of Freedom: How the John M. Olin Foundation Changed America.
