WASHINGTON, July 21 — The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, American officials said Friday.

The headline – and the message it sends – are less valuable for the average reader than for, well, “others”. For over a week, I’ve heard story after story about the Bush administration not making itself heard. What these reveal is the tin ear of the established punditry, who are apparently incapable of recognizing – or, possibly, simply acknowledging – that the President has been engaged diplomatically. Diplomacy is, after all, a subtle art: even non-involvement is, in its own fashion, involvement.
