The county schools in my neck of the woods are tacking ten minutes onto each elementary-school day from now until the end of the year to make up for lost time during this winter’s snowstorms. This is to satisfy a state requirement regarding a minimal number of instructional hours. The blizzards were about three months ago. Why wasn’t the problem discovered until now? Because school administrators originally had calculated recess time as “instructional.” They say it was an honest mistake. Sounds like someone botched a story problem.
