Shutdown Ends

At 10:11 p.m. on Wednesday, the House reached the 217-vote threshold it needed to end the 16-day government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling. In all, 284 House members voted in favor of the compromise bill approved by the Senate earlier in the evening and 144 members, all Republicans, voted against it.

A minority of the GOP conference — 87 Republicans, including House speaker John Boehner — cast votes in favor of the bill.

The deal to reopen the government was formally approved by the lower chamber at 10:20 p.m.
