I have read Doonesbury for a long time, although in recent years it has been mostly out of habit. The strip is not “reliably funny,” as Jeffrey Toobin writes in his contribution to “Slate’s complete coverage” of its 40th anniversary. It still has its moments, but it has lost much of its cultural relevance–a point that Slate’s exercise in liberal Boomer nostalgia could hardly have been better designed to confirm.
