I didn’t know Tony Snow very well, but I did meet him shortly after I arrived in Washington. He was an excellent political columnist for the Detroit News; I was a wannabe writer who happened to be from Detroit. So I sent him a note, sheepishly suggesting that we have lunch. He invited me to come see him in Arlington. He worked in a tall building, in an office that had a wonderful view of the National Mall. We ate at a Chinese place. I asked for career advice. He gave it, encouraging me to keep writing and to grab opportunities when I found him. What I remember most was his profound niceness. He was truly a happy warrior.
