Social Security and the Right

The intra-conservative debate on Social Security has gotten fairly intense lately, thanks mostly to the hot-tempered folks at the Institute for Policy Innovation. In the latest salvo, Larry Hunter is accusing NR’s editors of “endors[ing] a Social Security tax increase.” Follow his link, though, and you’ll see that he’s misreading. Here’s what the editorial actually says: “Two years ago, Bush was so eager to enact personal accounts that he signaled his openness to tax increases to get them. If personal accounts are off the table, the tax increases should be, too.” Conservatives have real disagreements on Social Security reform: I’m not where Hunter is. But there’s no reason for us to invent disagreements that don’t exist.
