The Trump administration has drafted a plan to subsidize stay-at-home parents, and conservatives are split over it. Today on The Editors, Rich asks Charlie what he thinks about the proposal.
“The two sides have dug in,” says Charlie, “with one saying, ‘This is socialism. America’s becoming a socialist nation! I thought conservatives were supposed to be against socialism,'” and the other side saying, ‘Why do you hate stay-at-home mothers and children?’
“Well, is it socialism, or is it tweaking an existing government program?” asks Charlie. “I don’t see this as increasing or decreasing the total amount of socialism in America. I think that pre-exists this proposed change because the budget stays the same.
“So I’ve been a little confused as to why this has engendered such strong reactions. On the detail, I think it’s probably illegal.”
