Over the weekend, the Bulgarian center-right party of Sofia mayor Boyko Borissov outpolled the ruling Socialist Party in elections for the European Parliament. Borissov is reportedly the most popular politician in Bulgaria, while the Socialists are reeling from a corruption scandal and years of ineffective government. Borissov argues that Bulgaria’s development and integration into the European mainstream requires a change in national policy towards fiscal restraint, tax reduction, and a more effective campaign against organized crime.
