I know this is a small thing compared to all that’s going on, but I do hope that the ongoing bank collapses produce one kind of bank closure: the shuttering of some of these local bank branches. In DC at least, a vast chunk of our best commercial real estate is taken up by banks. They crowd out stores and restaurants while contributing next to nothing to the quality of life. It seems that whenever an establishment closes, instead of getting something fun or useful, we get another Wachovia or Citibank. I’d gladly trade one out of two banks in Northwest Washington for a couple really good diners (which barely exist in DC).
