Some Things Considered

Call me a crunchy-con-symp pantywaist, but I like NPR. I listen to it in the car almost every day (my local affiliate’s news and bluegrass stations both). My experience with its reporters and talk shows has been positive — sure, they’re liberals, but with very few exceptions I’ve found them fair and professional.

So I was pleased to read that it’s nearly doubled its listenership over the past ten years, even as TV and papers have seen theirs tank. But just because it’s well done doesn’t mean it should be getting tax money (originally, the rationale for that was to increase diversity of information sources, something that’s hardly justifiable today). Here’s a theme for their next beg-a-thon: “Help free NPR from its reliance on tax money!”
