Something New from Iran

I have never heard this before, but considering the sources–an interview with Shirin Ebadi published in Asharq Alawsat and posted on one of Iran’s most authoritative blogs , Baztab–I believe it.

After approximately 18 years following the Iraqi-Iranian war, Iran still has 4 million hectares containing landmines. These mines are not only on the borders; some are planted inside Iranian cities. On average 2-3 people are injured or killed by landmines every day in Iran. This is not a subject that is discussed in Iran and there are no civil institutions that work for that cause, however three years ago we set up an organization that addresses this issue.

That’s something between seven hundred and a thousand people a year killed or wounded by the regime’s own landmines.
