Southern/Western Dummies?

I haven’t read Jeff’s essay yet–I’m in the Catskills, which can be as uncivilized as the south and west–but judging by Ramesh’s and Jonah’s comments, it is a U-turn from his beliefs of thirty years ago when he predicted, in a long NR essay, that George Wallace would win the Democratic nomination in 1976, and that this would be a welcome rebuke to GOP squishes.
