Recently, a Spanish couple not only welcomed the first child for their family, but the first child for their town in 45 years as well. Beatriz and Iker are the first parents to give birth in Los Giles since 1968.
The new parents moved to Los Giles, a village in southern Spain with a population of about 60, predominantly elderly, so that the family could be close to Beatriz’s parents, as well as “grow up close to nature.” “Everyone’s really pleased — this is a celebration,” said one of the village’s residents. Nearly all residents have held the child, according to UPI.
While Los Giles is of course a unique situation, Spain as a nation has one of the lowest fertility rates in the world, at 1.4 children per woman.
