Specter on EFCA

The politics of this issue don’t seem all that complex. Sure, the unions will come after congressmen who vote no. But any Republican officeholder ought to be able to defend his vote, even in front of a union crowd. In response to any ad on card check–or, for that matter, to any hostile ad from the unions on any other issue–the candidate can just say, The union leaders are coming after me because I’m protecting your right to a secret ballot. Add into the mix Specter’s potential trouble in getting through a primary and it seems even clearer that his own political interests counsel opposition to EFCA. (Good thing he’s running again.)
