Specter’s Message

Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Arlen Specter is sending messages with the timing of Tuesday’s second hearing on Brett Kavanaugh. Originally, Specter scheduled the hearing for 4 p.m. — a clear sign that he wanted it to be short and out of the news cycle.  Now, after Democrats express unhappiness, Specter has compromised a little and scheduled the hearing for 2 p.m.  But the message is essentially the same.  Normally such a hearing would be set for 9:30 a.m., and Specter’s scheduling indicates that, no matter what Democrats want, he has no interest in making it an all-day affair.
