Former New York governor and recently announced New York City comptroller candidate Eliot Spitzer described himself as a “feminist” on MSNBC Tuesday evening. Despite the prostitution scandal that disrupted his tenure as governor in 2008, Spitzer stated that the record he had “was one of devout dedication to women’s rights.” He said that he has been a consistent advocate for women “on the issues of choice, on the issues of equal pay, on the issues of anti-discrimination” throughout his career.
Responding to a female protester’s criticism of his past conduct, Spitzer told All In host Chris Hayes that “it hurts” that women oppose his current campaign for elected office and he hopes that voters will “look at the totality” of his record when making their decision. He pointed to his actions as attorney general and emphasized that as governor he had signed an anti-human trafficking law.
