Here is State Department spokesman Jen Psaki describing John Kerry talking to the president of the Syrian opposition, per the New York Times:

Mr. Kerry expressed his condolences and the Obama administration’s “commitment to looking into what has happened on the ground,” Ms. Psaki said.

Now, the Syria opposition isn’t anything to write home about to say the least (see this other Times report), but this is almost a comical level of fecklessness.
