The State of Our Public Oratory

On the topic of public oratory, a reader asks if I don’t consider Pat

Buchanan a good orator. Yes, I do–he’s about as good as it gets nowadays.

However, I have a sidebar on this: Pat has so internalized his

public-speaking skills that he carries them over into his private

conversation. At a crowded & noisy reception once, leaning close to Pat to

hear what he was saying, I was nearly decapitated by one of his karate-chop

hand gestures.
