A reader tells me that CNN keeps harping on the fact that Harold Ford, if elected, would be the first black Senator from “the south” since reconstruction but they never say likewise when discussing Steele.
I know that Maryland doesn’t seem like the South to a lot of people, but technically, it’s a southern state. Still, I bet if Steele was a Democrat, someone at CNN and elsewhere would have noticed that Maryland is in the South. But black Republicans don’t count in all sorts of way, this being just one of them.
