Stephanopoulos to Obama: Isn’t Your Foreign Policy Failing by Your Own Standards?

In an interview Thursday, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos quoted Obama’s own words from his 2006 book, Audacity of Hope: “Without a well-articulated strategy that the public supports and the world understands, America will lack the legitimacy and ultimately the power it needs to make the world safer than it is today.”

Noting that polls consistently show the majority of Americans don’t support Obama’s foreign policy, Stephanopoulos asked the president, “Are you failing by your own standard?”

Obama responded that throughout the first half of his presidency, polls consistently showed strong support for his foreign policy, and argued that the public does not need to support his choices every minute or every week.

“There are going to be times when the world is messy,” he said. “If the problems were easy, somebody else would have solved them already.”

Obama continued that one of the great challenges and also great privileges of his job is that “you’re tackling stuff that is really tough.”

“I’m glad that after five years, I’m still here able to do it,” he said.
