Steve Scalise Elected New Majority Whip

House Republicans picked Steve Scalise of Louisiana as the next majority whip on Thursday, adding what some consider a more conservative voice to current leadership.

The congressman will replace Kevin McCarthy of California, who was elected earlier in the afternoon as the next majority leader following Eric Cantor’s resignation from the spot. Scalise, who was elected in 2008, previously served as chairman of the Republican Study Committee.

Scalise defeated Peter Roskam of Illinois and Marlin Stutzman of Indiana for the whip spot, the third most senior position in House majority leadership.
