Still Fighting for Marriage in Maine

Now that the governor has signed a bill redefining marriage in Maine, opponents of the bill can soon begin gathering signatures calling for an election to repeal the new marriage law (a “citizen’s veto”). The organizers of the repeal effort will have 90 days after the end of the legislative session to collect more than 55,000 signatures supporting the repeal election. It appears the deadline would be September 15 if the session proceeds as planned.

The organization heading up the effort to reaffirm marriage as the union of a man and a woman is a coalition called the Maine Marriage Initiative, and those interested in keeping up on this important effort can sign up for information online.
