This Strikes Me

as utterly bizarre, at the tail-end of a Howard Fineman piece: “Washington sits on a substratum of Catholic conservatism that few people who aren’t from here understand. It goes back to Georgetown University and pre-D.C. Maryland history. It is that community that Roberts represents, and that Bush is paying homage to with this pick.” Well, I’m not from here–how many people in D.C. are? (And I try to avoid being a “conservative Catholic.”) But just to begin with–Georgetown University? Really? And why would Bush need to “pay[] homage” to D.C.-area Catholic conservatism?
