Struck by a Meteorite

Several readers tell me that the riposte: “What, and be struck by a

meteorite?” (given in reply to a suggestion that one sit outdoors in fine

weather) was coined by Robert Benchley. He seems to have said “meteor,”

which is strictly correct, as the thing doesn’t become a meteorite until it

hits the ground.
