Rich, as someone who worked in the Green Zone for six months last year, I can say that a pull out there would be a bad idea. For one it’s hard enough to mentor the Iraqi generals and leadership when all you have to do is take a two minute walk over to the Ministry of Defense or Ministry of Interior ect. Imagine I told you that you had to rebuild a fortune 500 company with another person who has zero business training, speaks a different language and worked on the other side of a city full of people who want to kill you both. That’s what would happen and the training and mentoring of our Iraqi counterparts would suffer immensely. We would make ourselves or the Iraqi officials more of a target by convoying 100 times more for simple routine meetings. Then we would have more IED’s and MSM “we are losing the war” than we do now. The Green Zone provides a safe reliable place to for Coalition and Iraqi counterparts to conduct the daily affairs of rebuilding the country.
