I think the Evangelical Maturity Theory among some center-right pundits is first cousin to the perennial New York Times piece gushing that “evangelicals are caring more about climate change and less about gay marriage…” The latter case is usually transparent in its hope that evangelicals will vote for Democrats. The former case is usually transparent in its hope that evangelicals will vote for Rudy Giuliani. Both types of pieces have a patronizing core assumption, and both are (mostly) written by people who themselves don’t well know many (if any) evangelicals.
