The Corner

Supply and Demand

Another NYT story on the horrific consequences of immigration enforcement. It focuses on a farmer in Upstate New York who is being forced by brutal and inhuman market forces to plant blueberries instead of sweet cherries, because the former can be harvested by machine. Oh, the humanity! This follows the heart-wrenching tale of a tomato farmer in Pennsylvania who, unable to procure his usual allotment of illegal-alien labor, buckled under the pressure from cruel, jack-booted authorities and planted corn instead, which doesn’t require as much labor. Has the immigration service no sense of decency? When will the long national nightmare of mechanized harvesting come to an end?
