Hello. This is one of those spiffing Corner posts that you enjoy reading each and every day. You know, those pithy pieces of writing that feature top-notch political analysis. Those posts that are learned and breezy and timely, with ample amounts of . . . what’s the word? Sprezzatura. The only problem is that, like one of those dogs in a commercial featuring the music of Sarah McLachlan, it could go away.
As I noted recently, we don’t take any government money. Nor do we have a billionaire owner whom we hate but expect to bankroll us anyway. We survive on the good, old-fashioned free market principle of selling a service to those who want it. Thomas Jefferson once said that “to compel a man to furnish funds for the propagation of ideas he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical,” and we think so, too. He was talking about religion, but the point stands.
But there’s a flip side. If people really like the ideas they read every day and are able to, they probably ought to help keep them coming. If that describes you, we hope you’ll contribute to our spring webathon. Any amount helps, and it’s certainly not too late to chip in. Thank you.
