New Mexico governor Susana Martinez doesn’t seem to like the current immigration-reform bill, particularly when it comes to its approach to border enforcement.
“We absolutely have to secure the border first,” Martinez said on Fox News last night.
She also said she had some reservations about a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, and called for a different kind of “legal status” instead.
“I think when you have a pathway to citizenship you end up disrespecting the people in the line who have been doing all the right things according to our laws to become a citizen,” Martinez explained. “The pathway to citizenship allows those people to jump in front of the line of those who have done everything correctly.”
Martinez did suggest, though, it’s possible those here illegally could have an opportunity to receive citizenship, but that they’d definitely have to ”get to the end of the line.” She added that “we want to encourage immigration” overall, too.
