I’m a little perplexed at the concept of a “sustainable ceasefire” as an objective in the crisis in Lebanon. Seems to me that this is what we have had with North Korea for 50 years, an armistice that solved nothing and allowed new and worse problems to develop. A ceasefire is by its nature temporary. Lenin would call it a peredishka, breathing space. Maybe State should set its sights a little higher than just getting Israel to stop pursuing its national interests and allowing the bad guys a chance to reload before starting it up again.
