Taxing Energy

Charles Krauthammer wants a higher gas tax combined with the end of fuel-economy standards and a reduction in the payroll tax. Rep. Bob Inglis and Arthur Laffer want a carbon tax offset by reductions in other taxes. My tentative view is that if either deal could be counted on to stick it would be worth taking–although I’d be interested to hear what Jim Manzi thinks. But I think a lot of conservatives are going to be suspicious that the higher taxes would prove more long-lasting than the tax reductions.
