Temporary = Permanent

David Dreier just finished on the House floor bemoaning illegal immigration but calling for a “responsible, non-amnesty-granting temporary worker program”. This is the kind of thing the Democrats (and some of the McCain-ite Republicans) recoil from, because they want a permanent amnesty. But I’m told that Howard Berman, Democrat from L.A., has been working behind the scenes to get a significant share of his party to agree to an ostensibly temporary program — because he knows that once the illegals, and new foreign workers, get legal status, the game is over and they will never be required to leave. In other words, any and every “temporary” worker program is, in reality, a permanent amnesty. So what we could eventually end up with is a foreign-worker proposal that Republican supporters can pretend is “temporary” but which the Democrats understand is a permanent.
