Mitt Romney and John Boehner applaud the Denver district judge’s injunction tonight.
Governor Romney:
Freedom of conscience has won an important victory. Today’s injunction preventing the federal government from forcing one family business from having to choose between keeping its doors open and violating its faith is a step in the right direction. But it is only a step, not the end of the struggle. We must ensure that the same freedom to live according to one’s faith is available to all Americans. If I am elected president, I will never cease fighting for freedom of conscience as it is guaranteed under the First Amendment.
The Speaker:
As both House Speaker and a former small business owner, I join millions of my fellow Americans in welcoming this ruling, which is a major victory in the effort to restore the religious liberty that has been demolished by the Obama Administration’s actions this year. The judge in this case determined that the Obama Administration’s arguments “are countered, and indeed outweighed, by the public interest in the free exercise of religion.” The American people agree, and the president and his allies in Washington would be wise to recognize it. Whether it is accomplished through judicial action, legislative action or other means, the administration’s attack on religious freedom must be reversed — and while much work remains to be done, today’s ruling is the surest sign yet that it will be.
Earlier today, Boehner’s office also emphasized: “The Speaker believes the administration’s mandate is an attack on religious freedom in America and that it needs to be reversed.”
