The Border-Funding Plus-Up

We talked about this a little on The Editors podcast this week, but it’s now more out in the open after Mick Mulvaney’s Sunday Show appearances today. The White House seems likely to accept whatever funding it gets for a barrier from congressional negotiations, then go and find other sources of money to be redirected to the border, perhaps with a declaration of a national emergency, perhaps without it. So this isn’t an either/or, but a both/and. This way, the administration gets to keep on refurbishing and building at the border with the congressional funds even if the redirected monies are blocked by the courts. We’ll have to see what the legal case is for the re-purposing of the various pots of money. Even if it’s solid, this is still not how our system is supposed to work, and Congress, the branch of government with the least self-respect, should be more mindful of its prerogatives going forward.
