The Power of the Dog Is a Terrible Movie

The Power of the Dog, a front-runner for Best Picture, is awful. I saw it, in part, because it was a Western with a 94 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I forgot that a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes means a movie is either very good or pretentious trash. The Power of the Dog is the latter. As for being a Western, I don’t think a gun was discharged during the entire movie. If anything the great Armond White’s evisceration of the film is too kind. It is bleak, depressing, plodding, implausible, and, at the very end, completely incomprehensible. I had to look up a couple of reviews afterwards to understand what had happened. Sing 2 is better than The Power of the Dog. Dog, which is actually winsome, funny, and moving, is better than The Power of the Dog. I don’t watch the Oscars and don’t care about the Oscars, but I am fervently rooting against any more recognition for this terrible movie.
