Apparently, the leadership of the University of Southern California’s Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work decided to “remove the term ‘field’ from our curriculum and practice and replace it with ‘practicum,’” declaring, “this change supports anti-racist social work practice by replacing language that would be considered anti-Black or anti-immigrant in favor of inclusive language.”
If those at the school are supposed to not use the word “field”… then good luck asking for directions for anyplace on campus near the facilities used by the USC Athletic Department. They’ll have to tell visitors, “go past the Brian Kennedy . . . er, place where the Trojans practice football, and then make a left at Brittingham Intramural . . . er, place where they do intramural sports. If you hit the McAlister Soccer . . . er, spot, then you’ve gone too far. And continue until you see the Cromwell . . . location where they do track and . . . er, other sports, and stop when you hit Dedeaux . . . er, area where they play baseball.”
Talk about a policy that is out in left fie-, er, I mean, out in left practicum. The USC critics are going to have a fie-, er, a really busy day with this rule in place. I doubt the university’s leaders will even fie-, er, I mean, take any questions about this decision. But maybe decisions like this are necessary so that all students have a level playing fie-, er, practicum.
