There She Goes Again

Hillary Clinton’s new Iraq position — that “”We expect [President Bush] to extricate our country from this before he leaves office” (Royal “we”?) — is the perfect posture. It commits her to nothing, yet seems to say something. It might placate the anti-war crowd, and keeps focus and blame squarely on the President. And if the new Iraq strategy works and we begin to pull troops out, she can declare victory too. It is also the kind of thing one could expect from her Administration, as we saw in her husband’s — posturing without policymaking, image without substance. I would consider her harmless except that the challenges the United States faces are real, and we have seen what happens when a president answers them with triangulation.
