Last month, I noted “Despite all the hype over Obama’s religious outreach, a new Pew survey indicates Obama actually has slightly less support from evangelicals than John Kerry had at this point four years ago.” Ross Douthat wisely sounded a cautionary note, observing that the survey showed “McCain is currently running eight points behind where George W. Bush stood at this point in ‘04 [among white evangelicals].”
Jeffrey Weiss has a follow-up today, and according to the latest Pew Survey, McCain has gained significant ground. He now has the support of 68 percent of white evangelicals compared to the 71 percent Bush had in August of ‘04. Obama, despite all of his campaign’s religious outreach, is at 24 percent — exactly the same amount of support Kerry had in August ‘04.
