Threat Assessment

At it’s core, what distinguishes left from right in the war on terror?  In part it’s a question of tactics.  But I think the deeper disagreement is over the scope of the threat.  Like Fukuyama, large sections of the left think the threat from Islamist terrorists and rogue states has been overblown.  For me, the core threat is nuclear terror at home, de facto control of the Gulf by a nuclear armed Iran, and the further mischief that would follow from nuclear proliferation throughout the Middle East.  For an eye-opening foreshadowing of these problems, see Bret Stephens review of Gordon Corera’s Shopping for Bombs: Nuclear Proliferation, Global Insecurity, and the Rise and Fall of the A.Q. Kahn Network.
