Thune: Keystone Pipeline ‘Right Out of the Gate’

Senator John Thune, who is set to take over the Senate Commerce Committee, pledged Sunday to push for construction of the long-delayed Keystone pipeline as soon as the new Republican Senate begins its session.

“We’re going to find out very early whether the president wants to play ball,” the South Dakota Republican said on Fox News Sunday. “Based on our past experience it would be the triumph of hope over experience, but you always enter a new Congress with high hopes.”

Thune noted that the State Department has made positive statements about the pipeline’s economic impact and that it had passed five environmental-impact studies.

“Right out of the gate we’re going to act in the Senate on the Keystone pipeline,” Thune said. “We think the president ought to sign that into law.”
