Today’s Questions for the President

Federal government spending this year is estimated to be 25 percent of GDP, the highest percentage since World War II. (Spending at all levels of government this year is estimated to be 41 percent of GDP, again, the highest percentage since World War II.)

Is there a level of federal government spending that, under prevailing circumstances, you would not go beyond? If so, what is that level and why would you not exceed it?

Bonus questions: You’ve chastised political opponents for not “paying for” proposed tax cuts. Do you maintain that the federal government is entitled to an irreducible level of revenue? Does the federal government then have first claim and an irreducible entitlement to an individual’s income? Put another way, whose money is it?
