Blair has also shown strong leadership on aspects of the war on terror–such as Iraq–but that leadership has also been seriously confused, even schizophrenic on other elements. Britain’s particular oddity in this struggle is that there is a contest for the nation’s soul between the English-speaking world and its civilization and the world of continental Europe. Blair has sided with the Anglosphere on Iraq and the war on terror, but with continental Europe on the longer-term issues such as a common European defense and foreign policy (which would always lean heavily against the U.S. and towards appeasement.) He sees Britain as predominantly a European power and thus wants to “pool” (i.e., surrender) its sovereignty. He was, after all, a strong supporter of the recent EU constitution. He still is. And that weakens and compromises his bold stand on other issues.
