Toomey-Manchin Fails

As had been predicted from early this morning, supporters of the Toomey-Manchin “compromise” amendment did not have the votes. This afternoon, it failed 54 to 46, six votes short of the 60 that were needed.

Four Republicans voted for the amendment: co-sponsor Pat Toomey, Maine’s Susan Collins, Arizona’s John McCain, and Illinois’s Mark Kirk. Five Democrats voted against it: Mark Begich and Mark Pryor from Arkansas, North Dakota’s Heidi Heitkamp, and Montana’s Max Baucus. Majority leader Harry Reid switched his vote to “No” for procedural reasons.

Chuck Grassley and Ted Cruz’s measure was also defeated. There are seven more amendments to go. The gun-control bill, for now at least, is dead.
