Dr. Antony Fauci, a top infectious-disease official at the National Institutes of Health, doesn’t support New York and New Jersey’s decision to quarantine for a significant amount of time anyone who returns from an Ebola-stricken country.
“As a scientist and as a health person, if I were asked, I would not have recommended that,” Fauci told ABC’s Martha Raddatz. The federal government, he said, won’t be changing its own policies about how to deal with Ebola patients and potential Ebola patients. He explained later in the segment, somewhat unclearly, that one downside to the quarantines imposed by Governors Christie and Cuomo is that they’ll make it harder for American health workers to go fight the disease in West Africa, where it must ultimately be subdued.
With some worrying about, for instance, the locales that the now-sick New York doctor visited just before testing positive for Ebola, Fauci reemphasized that the scientific evidence suggests the disease is simply not that contagious. “The scientific data tells us that people without symptoms, with whom you don’t come into contact with body fluids, are not a threat,” the doctor said.
