The Trayvon Martin Shooting in Mural Form

There’s tasteless, and then there’s a mural of the Trayvon Martin shooting that was unveiled at the Florida Capitol last Friday.

Martin is depicted on the left of the mural, his chest spurting blood and his face replaced with a mirror so viewers can see themselves as him. Behind and to the left of the Martin figure is Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., who has blood trickling down his face.

Behind and to the right of the two, a figure that resembles George Zimmerman discharges his handgun. Notably, the Zimmerman figure bears none of the injuries that the real Zimmerman sustained that night (black eyes, a “closed fracture” of the nose, and cuts to the back of his head).

The artwork has spaces where the public can share its thoughts.

The mural is part of The American Color Mural, which is 50-feet long and 8-feet tall, and also contains portraits of Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, and Oskar Schindler, in addition to several others.

The artist, a Miami woman who goes by the name Huong, is a Vietnamese refugee and peace activist.
