Lobbyist Lott: I, for One, Welcome My New Trump Overlord

Trent Lott, the wheeler-dealer former Senate majority leader who is now a Washington lobbyist, went on record last month as preferring Donald Trump over Ted Cruz as president because of Cruz’s hostility to the way Washington works. A John Kasich supporter, he now appears to be getting ready to adapt to any Trump takeover of the GOP.

Lott told Monday’s Washington Post: “I don’t think people have any idea what Trump would do. He might wind up being the most magnanimous, inviting and generous person you could imagine. Who knows?”

Lobbyist Lott’s comments remind me of the 1994 episode of The Simpsons, in which a newscaster mistakenly thinks the Earth is about to be invaded by giant space ants. Fearing for his life, he announces his willingness to submit to the imagined invaders:

One thing is for certain: there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.
