If you look back at the transcript of the debate, Anderson Cooper asked Trump three times whether he had ever kissed or groped women without their consent. Trump tried not to answer, but then couldn’t wiggle off the hook and had to say “no.” That set the predicate for tonight, with three women saying they were kissed or groped by Trump, four if you count another women who had posted on Facebook about her experience with Trump. This feels like it could be just the beginning. The accusations will obviously put a strain on the “it was just words” defense, and the “it was years ago” defense is contradicted by the Trump campaign’s own focus on old Clinton allegations. It could be another dreadful couple of days for the Trump campaign, although Republicans may be more circumspect about denouncing or un-endorsing him than over the weekend, given the blow back that many of them experienced. If you believe in an accidental chain of events, Trump’s taking of the bait on Alicia Machado led to the unearthing of the “Access Hollywood” tape, which led to Cooper’s questions, which led to this. If you take a more suspicious view, the Democrats/media knew about this Trump vulnerability long ago, and waited to spring it when it would do maximum damage to his candidacy and the party.
