Trump Bounces off the Turnbuckle

There was something about The Donald’s crazed announcement Tuesday that reminded me of wrestling, and then it struck me — there is the stink of “Classy” Freddie Blassie, the old bombastic wrestler and ringside announcer (“you pencil-necked geek”) for Vince McMahon’s old WWF, on the Man Who Would Be President. Loud, obnoxious, confrontational, the hair thing going on — yes, The Donald was channeling the old carnival barker.

And then it struck me, on what was a night of getting struck, that Trump indeed really had something, even a lot, to do with wrestling. A quick Google search, and voilà: No. 45 Wannabe was the star of Wrestlemania 23. My favorite line, as the suited billionaire clotheslines his foe: “the hostile takeover of Donald Trump on Vince McMahon!”

Also: Trump was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. What an honor! Are we on the ropes, or by now pinned and waiting for the count of three? Weep America, because somewhere George Washington surely is.
